MeMe's Homesteading Blog
Welcome to Meme’s Homesteading Blog and the home of Cowie the Marketing Steer.
This website exists to provide information and education about homesteading for anyone who wants to be a little more self-reliant, whether they live in the back country or in a big city.
Do you feel like a hamster on a wheel? Feel like you are missing some sort of connection with wholesomeness? You are not alone. In today’s world of asphalt and over-processed foods, it is hard to feel grounded. Meals taste great, but they just aren’t satisfying. Filth is everywhere. Everyone is rushing everywhere and not really going anywhere. And there is this longing for a simpler time, when food was actually wholesome, not just called “wholesome”, the air was fresh, and the smell of flowers filled the breeze in a way your deodorizer could never match.
You can have it. Or at least a piece of it. Even if you can’t run through a meadow in your bare feet in the early morning sunshine, you can grab back a little bit of that joy your ancestors held so dear. You don’t have to sit around watching “Little House on the Prairie” reruns to fill that void. Homesteading really can be your life.
We are just getting started with this website, so check back often as more articles are added.

Learn gardening basics with easy-to-understand articles. Whether you live on a farm or want to plant a tomato on your patio, we have something you can use.
Growing vegetables is a science, literally. So, we will dive into soil science in an easy-to-understand package, and move on to harvest.
Canning. Dehydrating. Freezer Canning. Have you ever tasted a canned tomato? One that has a full-bodied taste without the metallic after-bite you get from those store tomatoes in a can? If not, you are honestly missing something. We will give you the basics of how to preserve the summer’s deliciousness for recipes throughout the year.
One of the main reasons folks become interested in homesteading is so that they can get back more control of their lives. If you are disillusioned by the world around you, and you feel like too much of your life is dictated by it, it is time to take back some of what is yours. Find articles about ways you can do things on your own instead of having to rely on paying someone to do it for you.
This is Cowie. Cowie Mandell to be exact. He’s a real half Charolais and half Limousin steer living in Appalachian farm country, where beef cattle are worth their weight in gold….as steaks.
Cowie is a steer, which means he had but one fate from the time he was a wee calf. Because, well…every farmer knows that steers are good for one thing, and one thing only. They can’t make calves or milk, so…..
2000 lb steers eat a lot of food, and the cost to feed them is close to astronomical, so the chances of Cowie making it past the butcher shop for more than two years were slim to none. And he was on that path.
But after watching his two best buddies, Simon Cow and Hydie Klum loaded on a truck never to return, he made a proactive decision. He would find a way to earn his keep that didn’t involve there being no more Cowie.
So, with the help of his little buddy MeMe, he set out to earn his weight in…plastic.. by becoming a Marketing Steer rather than a Market Steer. You’ll find some of Cowie’s offering in the Store pages of this website. And, yes, the proceeds really do go to feed Cowie and cover his many other expenses.
